Mine Museum provides renovation update

When the Squamish Historical Society meets on Thursday (Oct. 14) at 7 p.m. at the new location, the Squamish Arts Council building on Cleveland Avenue, the guest speaker will be Kirstin Clausen, the executive director of the Britannia Mine Museum.

She will be sharing with members the wonderful and exciting things that are going on at the mine.

The annual Hilltop House Harvest tea will be held on Saturday (Oct. 16) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. The afternoon also includes a bake sale and a raffle with five great prizes to be won. Donations of baked goods for the sale are much appreciated and can be taken to Hilltop on Saturday morning or by 1 p.m. This annual event is sponsored by the Hilltop House Support Society and volunteers are always welcome to help out.

The Adult Afternoon Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will meet on Tuesday (Oct. 12) from noon to 1 p.m. to discuss the book The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai. If you have read this book, you are invited to join the discussion. Please note, the library will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, Monday (Oct. 11).

If the weather co-operates, the WOW group will meet at Canadian Tire on Monday (Oct. 11) for a local ride. For more information, please call Shirley at 604-898-5715.

Drop by St. John's Anglican Church on Diamond Road tomorrow, (Oct. 9) from 9 a.m. to noon and take in the English-style boot sale where items will be sold out of car trucks. And while there, pick up a delicious homemade pie for Thanksgiving.

The Squamish Environment Society is sponsoring its last in a series of estuary walks on Monday (Oct. 11) from 10 a.m. to noon. Dress for the weather and meet at Third Avenue and the Estuary dike (one block south of Vancouver Street before the bridge to the Squamish Terminals). The Squamish Estuary Exploration volunteer interpreters will be there to welcome you.

The Women's Auxilliary to the Squamish General Hospital will be selling raffle tickets today and Saturday (Oct. 9) at Wal Mart from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for their annual Christmas Bazaar in November. Your support is much appreciated.

The Over the Hill Hikers will meet at the corner of Ross and Government Roads for a Cheakamus Lake and Helm hike at 9 a.m. on Tuesday (Oct. 12). Cars are needed at each end for this long outing. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

On Thursday (Oct. 14), the Hilltop House Support Society will hold its annual general meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the old activity room. New members are always welcome to join.

The Tantalus Seniors Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Oct. 14) for a Spit Dike walk and members are asked to meet at the last bend on the dike for a walk to the end of the dike and around the loop. For more information, please call Joyce at 604-898-5594.

The Seniors Health and Wellness Fair with free immunizations for those 65 years and older will be held in the Squamish Seniors Centre on Wednesday, Oct. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please note the date change and on that day, all regular classes will be cancelled.

The cafeteria at the Seniors Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. an is open to all ages. New to the menu is all say breakfast and there is also delicious soup and sandwiches and desserts available.

The Squamish Historical Society is sponsoring a fundraiser at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Friday (Oct. 15) at 6 p.m. in the form of meat draws throughout the evening. All proceeds will go to the restoration of the Wilkie building at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park.

On Friday (Oct. 15) at 10 a.m., the Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at the parking lot next to the Squamish Golf Course for a trail walk. For more information, call Darleen at 604-892-2092 or myself at 604-815-0152.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre (HSWC) has submitted an idea to the Aviva Community Fund to help expand Pearl's 2nds and the HSWC's programming. You can vote online for the project(s) of your choice at avivacommunityfund.org to cast.
