Proctor to speak on child-centered learning

Talk planned Oct. 19 at Squamish Public Library

Teacher and author Pamela Proctor will be in Squamish next week to talk about her personal experience in the evolution of child-centred learning in Vancouver public schools.

Proctor, whose local talk next Saturday (Oct. 19) is part of a series of talks in Valemount, McBride, Lillooet, Pemberton and Squamish, will also speak about the start-up and sustainability of Kindergarten to Grade 3 learning programs inspired by Reggio Emilia.

Proctor has met with many teachers and parents on her previous speaking tours throughout the province for her book Honouring the Child: Changing Ways of Teaching.

During those meetings Proctor became aware of a need for practical information about how to organize and create structure to facilitate child-centred or personalized learning. As a result of her further research and contact with Emilio-inspired initiatives in 2012, she developed her second book, Honouring the Child II: A Guide to Ways of Learning for Teachers and Parents.

A UBC graduate, she taught in Vancouver public schools for 35 years. With likeminded colleagues she founded an innovative child-centred program at Charles Dickens Annex in East Vancouver and was a project leader to improve learning conditions in inner city schools. Proctor, who lives in Gibsons, continues share her experience and insights with today's teachers and parents.

She is set to speak on Oct. 19 at 2 a.m. at the Squamish Public Library. For information contact Ella-Fay Zalezsak, library director, at (604) 892-3110.
