Raise your beer stein and bring on Oktoberfest

Fourth annual German-themed celebration returns

It’s time for Squamish to dust off the lederhosen and dirndls.

The fourth annual Squamish Oktoberfest returns to the Howe Sound Brew Pub on Oct. 18 and Squamish Montessori School wants to see the entire community partying in their best German garb.

The event is a fundraiser for the school, and in the past has featured activities like a yodelling contest, hammering competition, wiener-rolling race, best-dressed German contest and the dreaded how-long-can-you-hold-a-stein-of-beer-straight-out-in-front-of-you competition.

A silent auction is planned, with items ranging from passes to the Sea to Sky Gondola to massages and yoga passes. A complimentary beer and stein is given to each attendee, and door prizes are also being awarded. Several other games, contests and live music are also scheduled.

Oktoberfest has attracted several hundred people in the past and all proceeds from the event go towards the school and its programs. Money from the party goes toward the school’s Parent Advisory Council, who reinvest it in Squamish. The council pays for activities, such as sporting trips to Brennan Park Recreation Centre or a class in which students visit markets to develop their own meal plans.

Tickets for the event are $25 and are available at www.squamishoktoberfest2014.evenbrite.ca or at the pub. The event begins at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18. For more details on the school, visit www.smsed.ca.
