Ravenswood-area parents lobby District of Squamish for playground

The parents say there aren't enough spaces for young children to play, as Brennan Park has limited capacity.

Squamish parents say they need a park in their neighbourhood.
Local parents are lobbying for a playground in the Ravenswood residential development.
Several residents sent letters to council, urging elected officials to consider having the municipality set up a playground in the area.

On Feb. 16, council unanimously voted in favour of sending the letters to staff for a response and reference in the 2022 budget discussion.

"I am reaching out because, within a 10-minute radius of Ravenswood, Seven Peaks, King Fisher and surrounding neighbourhoods, we have a playground that can accommodate a max of seven children," wrote Ravenswood resident Shiera Aryev.

"Brennan Park has an outdoor gym that is completely unused (In my 1.5 years of living

here I've seen it used once by one person). The pump track and skate park are great, but they are

also not accessible to younger children unfit to ride bikes/skateboards. On my street alone, there are around 15 babies that I know of born in 2020."

Kelly Burke, another resident in the area, had similar thoughts.

"I am very disappointed at the lack of a community and neighbourhood playground. The existing one that is closest to us in Brennan park is not large enough to serve our community needs and only has two swings and a small slide," Burke said.

A total of five letters were received by council, all of them making the same demands.

For now, however, it appears as if parents will have to wait at least a year.

"Staff has made the commitment to install the playground at Dentville Park in 2021 and therefore there is no capacity for an additional playground this year," reads a message from a District spokesperson.

"The request will be considered for inclusion in the 2022 budget and reviewed against other priorities outlined in the Parks and Recreation Master Plan."
