Gift giving items will be displayed on the sewing tables and there will also be an in house raffle. Plan to visit the Tea Room where scones, muffins and tea or coffee will be offered.

It is Scrabble Night at the Squamish Public Library on Tuesday (Nov. 20) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. This is the ninth annual Scrabble Tournament and is part of the festivities celebrating Family Literacy Week, which runs Jan. 21 to 27, 2013. Play individually or get together a team of two to four players.

The Squamish Public Library will welcome author Lisa Baile to the library on Thursday (Nov. 22) from 6:30 to 8 p.m. for the launch of her new book John Clarke: Explorer of the Coast Mountains. Lisa Baile is a medical researcher who is an active member of the B.C. Mountaineering Club and the Alpine Club of Canada.

Members of the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital have been selling tickets for their Christmas raffle recently. The winners will be announced at their Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 24 at the Squamish United Church.

Hilltop House will celebrate birthdays this month on Wednesday (Nov. 21) at 2 p.m. when Doreen Hyland, Jamie Pietila, Joan Gravkin, Thelma Whitefield and Dianne Toplye will be honoured.

The Squamish Public Library and A Community Aware is presenting a compelling new workshop entitled Addiction: It's Not About Drugs on Saturday (Nov. 24) from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The facilitators are Bruce Alexander, author of The Globalization if Addiction and Barry Morris, a United Church minister at Longhouse Ministry in Vancouver. On Wednesday (Nov. 21) the Squamish Food Bank will open its doors from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for grocery distribution at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

There is still time to enrol in the Charcoal and Pastel drawing workshop at the Seniors Centre on Sundays (Nov. 18, 25 and Dec. 9 and 16) from 9 a.m. until noon. Soup and Sandwich at the Seniors Centre is now going to be a Theme Lunch. Last month it was an Oktoberfest feast and for this month it will be comfort food with a chicken pot pie and all the trimmings on the menu for $9. The next date is Thursday (Nov. 29) and tickets must be purchased in advance, otherwise regular menu options will be available.

Another bingo night is planned at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Nov. 19) with doors open at 5 p.m.

The Polar Bear Express is coming to the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on the weekends of Dec. 1 and 2 and Dec. 8 and 9. First class admission for all ages is $39 each, plus HST, coach is $24 all ages plus HST and to ride in the caboose it is $50 all ages plus HST. The Squamish Culture and Heritage Festival will be held at Quest University on Nov. 23 and 24. It is an event not to be missed as it will include workshops, music, films, art displays and more.

The Squamish Food and Beverage Cornucopia is a fundraiser to help send the Grade 5 French immersion students at Squamish Elementary School to the North Vancouver Outdoor School. It will be held at the Rock Bar and Grill at Chances, 9000 Valley Dr., on Thursday (Nov. 22). Tickets are $20 in advance and include wine or beer and appetizers for those 19 years and older. The Cedar Valley Waldorf School is holding a gala auction at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Friday (Nov. 16) at 7:30 p.m. Anton Holland is still touring at 92 and he will be on stage at the gallery on Saturday (Nov. 17) at 8 p.m.
