Scrabble your way through Literacy Week

Have a fun evening with family and friends while supporting literacy in the community.

On Monday (Jan. 26) you will have a chance to test your knowledge at the Harry Potter Trivia Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Squamish Library. Anyone 12 years and older is welcome to attend and there are prizes for those in costume. Please call the library at (604) 892-3110 if you are planning to attend. Family Game Night at the library is tonight (Jan. 27) with pre-registration required.

Another chance to take in the Winter Farmers' Market in the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park is Sunday (Jan. 29) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Courage to Grieve Bereavement Support Group is for those who have suffered the loss of a loved one. If that someone is you, please consider joining this group offered by the Squamish Hospice Society. In times of grieving, it is important to know that you are not alone. Gatherings will take place Wednesdays from Feb. 1 to March 7 at the Squamish Hospice office at 38140 Behrner Dr. (close to Hilltop House) from 7 to 9 p.m. There is no charge for you to participate. The Squamish Valley Quilters will meet on Wednesday (Feb. 1) in the Sandman Hotel for a social sew day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and anyone interested in quilting is invited. Take along a lunch and join others for a dinner before the evening meeting from 7 to 9 p.m. or just attend the meeting. If you wish more information, please call (604) 898-9240.

Seniors are invited to the Seniors Centre on Wednesday (Feb. 1) at 2 p.m. for an educational session entitled "Everything You Should Know About Diabetes and Heart Disease." The five presenters are from Vancouver Coastal Health and are well informed on these health issues. On Monday (Jan. 30) a free journaling class sampler will be held at the Seniors Centre at 10 a.m. Weekly sessions begin the following week and will offer inspiration to deepen your writing skills and uncover writing you didn't know you could do. On Tuesday (Jan. 31) a free memoir writing class sampler will be held at 6 p.m. Most people have thought about writing their memoirs but few do. What little stories have you forgotten and tucked away? No previous writing experience is required. Please register at the front desk for these classes.

The Squamish Food Bank will open its doors at the Alano Club on Third Avenue on Wednesday (Feb. 1) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the distribution of grocery hampers.

An intensive education course for family members of the seriously mentally ill (schizophrenia, depression, bipolar and anxiety disorders) and sponsored by the North Shore Schizophrenia Society will be held in Squamish each Tuesday at 7 p.m. from Feb. 15 to May 2. There is no charge to attend but space is limited and you are requested to call (604) 926-0856 or (604) 849-2252 to register.

On Saturday (Feb. 4), a garage and rummage sale will be held in Trinity Hall at Squamish United Church from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Take in a night of bingo at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 on Monday (Jan. 30) with doors open at 5:30 p.m.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre 30th Anniversary Gala at the CN Roundhouse and Conference Centre at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park on April 14 will have keynote speaker Stephen Lewis addressing "Women. Influence. Our World!" Joining him will be Katrina Pacey, a Vancouver-based lawyer who works with Pivot Legal Society. Are you a woman who enjoys singing in harmony and having fun? Then consider joining the new "Sweet Adelines" chorus. Sweet Adelines sing four-part-harmony, barbershop-quartet-style arrangements.
