Sea to Sky Crime Stoppers is the winner of the 2017 Milestone Award for property recovered.

In 2017, anonymous tips received by the organization led to $177,340 worth of stolen property being recovered.

The organization covers the area from Bowen Island to Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.

The award, which was accepted by Squamish Community Policing Coordinator Wendy Shard in Victoria this week, measures the amount of property recovered compared to the local population.

“The communities in the Sea to Sky are special. We all look out for each other more than in a big city. You see that with our high usage of Crime Stoppers,” said president Jeff Cooke in an email.

Cooke said the organization has seen an increase in the quality and volume of information since they began aggressively using social media,

“Our program is working very effectively. People in our Sea to Sky communities want a safer place to live. More and more are using Crime Stoppers as a way to anonymously pass on information about crimes, which helps keep us all safer, more secure, and brings criminals to justice.”

Cooke said the volunteer-run non-profit is looking for new members for their board of directors.
