Squamish Chief reporter Ina Pace and summer intern Auni Dayton hit the streets to ask locals a simple question: Should the federal voting age be lowered to 16?
The question was sparked by the fact that at the July 16 council meeting, local teens Jason and Jerry Song gained unanimous support from elected officials to endorse the Vote16 BC campaign and request Mayor Armand Hurford write a letter of support to the Minister of Housing and Municipal Affairs, Ravi Kahlon.
The Vote16 campaign is a national network of groups who believe "it’s time to extend voting rights to 16 and 17 year olds in Canada."
This issue has global reach.
The British government has committed to lower its voting age to 16 by the next general election.
Locals shared with us a mix of opinions on the matter.
