The rainy weather on Sunday (Sept. 25) may have dissuaded several people from attending but it didn't wash away the passion of the Squamish River Watershed Society (SRWS) and its partners during the annual Rivers Day event in Britannia Beach.
A small but passionate group of participants took in the day's festivities, which attracted several local politicians including West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McInyre and Squamish Coun. Paul Lalli.
The event took place at the Britannia Mine Museum for the first time and Kirstin Clausen, the museum's executive director, said she would love to host the event again, only with a more co-operative Mother Nature.
Several groups took part in the event including B.C. Hydro, the Squamish Streamkeepers, the North Vancouver Outdoor School, Squamish CAN and the Diamond Head Fish Market.
Rivers Day also gave the public the chance to tour the Epcor Water Treatment Facility, which was a catalyst in the restoration of Britannia Creek from a lifeless body of water to one teeming with life - including pink salmon, as recently reported in The Chief.
In addition to the tour, there were family activities, interactive displays, presentations and the opportunity to learn more about the Sea to Sky Corridor's waterways.
Since 1998, the SRWS has been hosting the event and in 2005 the United Nations declared the last Sunday in September to be World Rivers Day, using B.C. Rivers Day as a model.
