Squamish businesses are in the running to win a second annual We Heart Local Award. The B.C.-wide award celebrates the creators behind the extraordinary food, drink and artisans in the province.
In 2013, Squamish had 239 nominees and this year the community has nominated an impressive 343.
Squamish nominees include Squamish Farmers’ Market, Billie’s Flower House, On the Farm Country Market, Locavore Food Truck, Stoney Market Farm, and Howe Sound Brewing beer.
Voting is open now until September 16. Anyone living in B.C. can vote for their favourite nominees in the categories listed above by visiting www.weheartlocalawards.ca.
New this year is the “vote sprint” which means the top five category favourites have two days of quick-fire voting on September 15 and 16.
“Maintaining a vibrant local food supply is dependent on the support of consumers,” Reg Ens, executive director of the B.C. Agriculture Council said. “The We Heart Local Awards are an opportunity for consumers to celebrate the hard work and passion of the people growing and preparing the wide variety of B.C. food we enjoy.”
There are some great incentives for people to vote. By voting, each person is automatically entered to win a $100 gift card to their local Farmers Market as well as the fabulous grand prize – three nights at Taku Resort and Marina on Quadra Island, a culinary weekend including cooking classes from some of B.C’.s most popular local chefs.
Winners of last year’s awards include the Howe Sound Brew Pub and the Locavore food truck.
