Squamish to celebrate World Oceans Day

Online events will pay homage to the environment

Local organizations are gearing up to celebrate World Oceans Day on June 8.

A series of virtual events organized under the banner of Squamish Wave of Change will be showcasing projects and initiatives featuring Howe Sound and other environmental landmarks.

The theme of each planned project is conservation.

The event includes a petition to global leaders to protect 30% of oceans

Tides Canada will be running a World Oceans Day photo, word submission, storytelling initiatives on its website. The organization is responsible for the Howe Sound Marine Reference Guide, which charts notable features of the sound.

My Sea To Sky is sharing a series of films about Howe Sound that were premiered at the Orca Celebration in September 2019.

The Squamish River Watershed Society will be hosting a “wonder walk.”

There will also be a livestream presentation by Jackie Hildering - “The Marine Detective” – teacher, underwater photographer, whale researcher and co-founder of the Marine Education and Research Society. 

Those interested can RSVP starting June 1.

Hildering attended Mamquam Elementary School and graduated from Howe Sound Secondary.

STAND is running a World Oceans Day Challenge for youth in Squamish, and the Georgia Strait Alliance is hosting Orca Friday.
