They are a cut above. Howe Sound Secondary School hosted its annual trades competition this week.

The local students are five weeks into their Carpentry Foundations training program at Howe Sound, in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University.

The following students made the grade at the 2024 Skills BC Regional Carpentry competition held on March 14:

1st – Kade Winstanley

2nd – Rocky McKone

3rd – Mason Fieldhouse

4th – Kai Bieman

These Skills Canada British Columbia Regionals are held throughout the province, and "provide opportunities for competitors and student spectators, to learn about careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors by watching live competitions and try-a-trade activities," according to the Skills Canada website.

Vicki Schenk, Sea to Sky School District career program co-ordinator, told The Squamish Chief that Winstanley would advance to the Provincial Finals taking place on April 17 at the Abbotsford Tradex.

"Special thanks to our local volunteer judges, Steve Warrender of Blue Water Concepts Ltd. And Jason Lorenz of Lorenz Developments Ltd," Schenk said.
