The Squamish Windsports Society is hosting a Spit Appreciation Day on Saturday, Aug. 21.

“Our goal is to raise awareness in the community about what they're going to lose,” said Nikki Layton, president of Squamish Windsports Society, referring to the dismantling of the Spit (training berm) as part of the Central Estuary Restoration Project (CERP), which is slated to begin this fall.

It will kick off with a welcome by a Squamish Nation Elder around 11 a.m. and will conclude around 2 p.m.

During the three hours, participants can enjoy a barbeque hosted by the Lions Club, try out and learn about stand-up paddleboards from Coastal Stoke SUP, learn on trainer kites on land, as well as other fun games to be played on the sandbar.

Additionally, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a sandcastle competition. To wrap up the event, there will be a windsport demonstration from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m.

“We really want to see everybody out there,” Layton said. “Whether you have, you know, six-month-old, one-year-old, three-year-old, five-year-old, whether you want to bring your elderly parents out there, whatever it is, you know, we hope you'll come out.”

“We just want the people of Squamish to just come out and celebrate this important part of what makes Squamish special and that's the ocean and the wind.”
