Tea time at Hilltop House

Annual event the Support Society's biggest fundraiser

Bring out the fine china. It's time for the annual Fall Tea at the Hilltop House.

Pies are busy being baked, while cookies, breads and all the yummy treats imaginable are being lined up for the Hilltop House Support Society's fundraiser on Saturday, Oct 15, at the residential care centre.

"It's all homemade," society member Karyn Smith said.

Money from the event goes toward the organization's Friday night dinners, meals prepared by members for the Hilltop House residents. Last weekend, 40 people attended the popular made-from-scratch supper. The cash will also cover the cost and maintenance fees for running the facility's bus, a service provided by the society.

"It is a big expense," Smith said.

The society also covers volunteer programming costs and pitches in to pay for the residence's occupational therapist's wish list. The tea is the society's biggest fundraiser of the year.

Besides the tea and pie - which is up for grabs for $4 - there will be a bake sale and lots of goodies to be won in a raffle. Prizes include a quilt, a handmade doll with a suitcase full of doll clothes, a garden bench and side table and $100 in cash. There will also be a 50/50 draw, Smith noted.

All of Hilltop's residents partake in the day. It's a lot of fun, Smith said. The event takes place from 1:30 to 3 p.m. in the new building at Hilltop at 38146 Behrner Dr.

The Hilltop House Support Society is always on the hunt for more volunteers. No experience is necessary to volunteer at the facility, as training is on-the-job style. Volunteers are able to choose their role, dates and times they wish to come to the centre. To volunteer at the facility, call (604) 892-9337 ext. 5 or email [email protected]. Volunteer applications can also be picked up at Hilltop.

Smith estimates 100 volunteers are needed. That would provide flexible hours for volunteers and provide Hilltop residents with activities from 3 to 8 p.m., seven days a week.
