The District of Squamish’s response to concerns about dog care

Is there a problem with abandoned dogs in Squamish?

Is there something funky with the Squamish Pound these days?

That is the gist of the question that has been circulating on social media in town.

Are dogs being abandoned and not cared for? What is the deal?

The Squamish Chief checked in with the District.

But first, what is the municipal pound for, anyway?

Animal control staff "pick up stray dogs and reunite them with their owners, respond to complaints or concerns, investigate dog bite incidents, animal neglect, and excessive barking complaints," reads the District's website.

"We enforce the leash law, dog licensing, dogs at large, and ensure that people scoop the poop."

The Squamish Chief asked the District where the dogs in the care of the pound are kept and where those taking care of them are stationed.

Christina Moore, director of communications for the District, says dogs are currently kept at the Animal Control Pound at the Public Works Yard as usual.

Moore added that the main Bylaw Services office is located at the RCMP detachment, but said that this doesn't impact the care of the animals.

"Dogs are managed and accommodated at the Pound. The Bylaw and Animal Control Officers spend much of their shifts on the road, as they always have, but are in the Pound to care for dogs in care as required."

Moore added that the province strictly regulates animal care, and bylaw officers regularly check in and care for any dogs as needed.

How to contact bylaw

During business hours, Animal Control issues within the community can be reported to 604-815-6866. For after-hours emergencies, Animal Control issues can be reported to the after-hours line at 604-815-4040.

Up for adoption?

While staff always seek to reunite animals with their owners, a pooch will be placed up for adoption if reunification is not possible—and the dog is suitable for rehoming.

To apply to adopt, fill in the web form and return it to the RCMP front counter on Finch Drive where it will get the attention of Animal Control.
