Wear your poppies with pride

In anticipation of Remembrance Day on Thursday (Nov. 11), members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 and Air Cadets #835 Griffon Squadron will participate in Poppy Days in our community this weekend.

All poppy funds stay in our community to assist veterans and their dependents, and the Legion has also given funds to the Air Cadets, Squamish Hospital, Hilltop House, youth and senior organizations and many graduating students have received bursary awards.

This weekend daylight savings time ends and you are reminded to set your clocks, watches, etc. back one hour before you retire on Saturday night.

"In the Know" is a monthly networking and information sharing session providing a topic expert on what parent/caregivers really want to know.

Free live website group viewing happens the second Wednesday of each month at the Squamish Public Library from 7 to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday (Nov. 10), "In the Know" present Collaborative Problem Solving with Dr. Don Duncan. This topic provides parents with practical information and tools to move from conflict to co-operation with their children.

The 2010 Seniors Christmas Banquet will be held on Friday, Dec. 3 at the Squamish Seniors Centre at 1201 Village Green Way. Tickets at $15 each are available at the Extra Foods Pharmacy, Shoppers Drug Mart Pharmacy and at the front desk at the Seniors Centre. The evening will include entertainment and dancing and as there are a limited number of tickets available, you are advised to pick up yours soon.

The volunteer drivers for cancer patients are in dire need of more drivers to transport patients to Vancouver for treatment. It is relatively easy to become a driver - a local 20 minute interview, an accident-free drivers abstract, three million dollars in car insurance and a painless training session in Vancouver (possibly could be held in Squamish if there are enough people). Drivers are reimbursed for their mileage. A driver is able to turn down a job at any time. If interested in helping, please call 604-898-5595 or email [email protected].

The Over the Hill Hikers are asked to meet at Don Ross Secondary School in Brackendale on Tuesday (Nov.9) at 9 a.m. for a Sea to Sky trail from Brandywine to the Athletes' Village. Cars are needed at each end of this hike. For more information, please call Heather at 604-892-9003.

Does food rule your life? Overeaters Anonymous may have the answer for you. The group has no dues, fees or weigh-ins. Everyone is welcome on Sundays at 10 a.m. at 38021 Third Avenue. For more information call 604-892-5748.

Do plan on taking in the burger and beer fundraiser at the Grizzly Pub tomorrow night (Nov. 6) starting at 6 p.m. This event is to raise funds for the Don Ross Outdoor Leadership program.

The Squamish Hospice Society is offering a Bereavement Drop-In for those experiencing grief and loss. It will be held each Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon from Nov. 10 to Dec. 15. The Brackendale Art Gallery is the location for the monthly Acoustic Jam and it will be held on Sunday, Nov. 7 from 7:30 to 10 p.m. A friendly welcome awaits everyone.

The Sea to Sky Invasive Species Council is holding a forum entitled Stop the Spread: Horticultural solutions to invasive species. This forum is focused on the horticulture industry, but all are invited to participate. It will be held in the Howe Sound Inn and Brew Pub at 37801 Cleveland Avenue on Wednesday (Nov. 10) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event is free and includes lunch. This timely message comes from the Squamish Trails Society. Wearing dark clothing is dangerous and risky as you cannot be seen! But you can be hit. Wear bright clothing and reflective accessories to ensure you can be seen. Be safe. Be bright at night.

Are you new in town and don't know too many people? Then the Squamish Local Socials may be for you. It was created to combat the unfortunate fact that there is a two-year waiting period to feel like a Squamish local. Organizer Bryan Raiser said he was really stoked at the event's success.

The Squamish Historical Society is having its second fundraising meat draw at the Royal Canadian Legion Brach #277 tonight, Friday (Nov. 5) from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Registrations for Keep Well Level 1, 2 and 3 exercise classes are now being accepted at the Seniors Centre for classes starting the first week in January 2011.

The dates for Christmas Bazaars this month are: Women's Auxiliary and Squamish Hospital on Nov. 13, St. John's Anglican Church on Nov. 20 and St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Nov. 27.
