More vulnerable Squamish women and children may be helped thanks to a new partnership between the Howe Sound Women’s Centre Society and Squamish Savings.
The partnership marks a new focus for the Squamish Savings advisory board: the two organizations will work together to build understanding needed to overcome issues related to violence against women and how gender violence impacts the community, according to a news release on the partnership.
“This community partnership takes us one step closer to achieving our vision of a violence-free future,” said Sheila Allen, executive director with Howe Sound
Women’s Centre Society. To mark the new collaboration, Squamish Savings, a division of Vancity, will provide $8,000 in grant support for Howe Sound’s Violence is Preventable Youth Education Program. The program is aimed at educating the approximately 500 Grade 10 teens in the corridor on healthy relationships, preventing sexual exploitation, boundary setting and anti-bullying.
The workshops are part of the Grade 10 Planning curriculum in the Sea to Sky corridor, including at Squamish’s Howe Sound Secondary School.
The workshops will begin this spring. For more on the Howe Sound Women’s Centre, go to hswc.ca.
