Young local raises funds to help Haiti

Many will remember Ian MacKay, the young man who made his own way to Haiti to help in the aftermath of a devastating earthquake last year. Well, MacKay wants to return and he's hosting a fundraiser to help with his mission at the Squamish Valley Golf and Country Club Thursday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m. where he will present a slideshow of his aid trip featuring breathtaking stories from the Haitian operating room of patients' courage to live on even though they have been left with nothing but the clothes on their back. Entrance is by donation. Funds will go towards offsetting MacKay's flight costs for his upcoming return trip at the end of the month.

An event to look forward to each year is the annual Hilltop House Harvest Tea, Raffle and Bake Sale and it will be held tomorrow (Oct. 16) from 1:30 to 3 p.m. There is always a fine selection of baked goods and preserves, and of course, it is a pleasure to partake in a delicious piece of pie and tea or coffee. The raffle winners will be announced at 3 p.m. for the doll and wardrobe (value $300), patchwork quilt (value $250), $100 cash and gift baskets of $100 and $75 value. The Hilltop House Support Society sponsors this special day with the help of many volunteers. Proceeds go towards equipment and activities to enhance the lives of HTH residents.

A kids' toy, clothing and sports sale happens at Brennan Park Recreation Centre tomorrow (Oct. 16) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The gymnasium will be filled to capacity with tables loaded with bargains.

The Caregiver Support Group will meet at the Seniors Centre from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 20) and anyone caring for an aging relative or partner undergoing physical or emotional changes is invited to attend. For further information, please call Donna Howard at 604-892-6400 ext 226.

On Wednesday (Oct. 20) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Squamish Food Bank will distribute grocery hampers at the Alano Club on Third Avenue.

The meat draw at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 tonight (Oct. 15) starting at 6 p.m. is a fundraiser sponsored by the Squamish Historical Society. All funds raised will go towards the restoration of the Wilkie building at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park.

The Parkinson Society of British Columbia is planning to start a support group for people living with Parkinson's, their family and friends, and depending on the need, the meeting will be held in either Squamish or Whistler. "The Ancient Night Sky and the Birth of Science" is the theme for the next Squamish Public Library and Quest University Canada lecture series and it will be held on Thursday (Oct. 21) at 7 p.m. It will be led by Dr. Glen Van Brummelen, co-ordinator of mathematics at the University.

This weekend, the Woman's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital will be selling tickets for their Christmas raffle at the Nesters Market today until 4 p.m. and on Saturday (Oct. 16) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gift shop at the hospital has new gift ideas on display including the popular tapestry bags.

The annual general meeting for the Squamish Environment Society will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Wednesday (Oct. 20) at 7 p.m. The guest speaker will be Caitlan Birdsall from the BC Cetacean Sightings Network, a program of the Vancouver Aquarium.

A talented young man and long-time resident, Roger Quesnel will have a showing of his work "Art Adventures" at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Oct. 17) at 3 p.m. Roger suffered a spinal cord injury in 1991 and during 15 years of rehabilitation he has created works in wood, stone, sculptures, prints and more.

The Squamish Environment Society members will conduct their monthly bird count on Sunday (Oct. 17) and they will meet at the Howe Sound Inn and Brewing Pub at 8 a.m. The group will be looking for migratory species of ducks Sunday. For more information, please call Judy at 604-892-3340.
