A jazzy night in Brackendale

Entertainment

Swingin' gypsy jazz hits the Brackendale Art Gallery this weekend.

Vancouver jazz musicians Hot Club of Mars will play the BAG on Sunday (June 12).

Thor Froslev of the BAG says the male members of the band are all seasoned musicians and singer Deanna Knight, who doubles as the group's songwriter, is the youngest member of the group. Knight joined the band in 2002.

According to Froslev, the band's inspiration comes from old-time jazz from the 1920s and 1930s and jazz artists like Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli.

Michael Dunn plays lead guitar and his resume includes a stint as the guitar-building instructor at Douglas College. He continues to build guitars and Froslev reports there are more than a few Squamish and Whistler residents with one of Dunn's guitars.

"Last year when he was here he played the 350th guitar he built," said Froslev.

Mark Dowding plays wind instruments and he started his career as a professional musician in 1970.

Steve Szabo is the rhythm guitar player and Charlie Knowles is the band's bass guitar player.

"They are like old seasoned musicians, been through the mill three or four times," said Froslev of the four males in the band.

The group is somewhat unique in that there is no drummer.

"They play all the old stuff, mostly old stuff," Froslev said. "It is upbeat hot jazz."

Tickets for the show are $15 and the show will start at 8 p.m.
