Get your urban groove on

Entertainment

If you're the kind of person who can't stay off the dance floor if the music is smoking and the beat drives through your spine like a freight train, mark your calendars for Aug. 26. That's the night Vancouver's eclectic and funky Freeflow bring its particular melding of genres to the Howe Sound Brew Pub for a night of "punk to funk, live to sample and structure to stream."

The band plays a mixture of hip hop, reggae and rock, blended seamlessly and complemented by the recent addition of an MC to the ranks.

"We added an MC for about the last year and a half," said Freeflow's Jason Evans. "Our sound has definitely gotten more urban."

In February, the band released its second album, a self-titled follow-up to the Barfly Sessions, which sold out two separate launch parties in Vancouver.

Since the release of the album, the members of Freeflow have been touring the material, all the while developing more tunes for future CDs.

"We've just finished doing a bunch of festivals this summer," Evans said. "We're touring western Canada in support of February's album.

"We've actually got enough new material for a third album," he added. "In fact, we probably have enough for an album and a half."

But, Evans said it may be a while before they go back into the studio to record.

"We need to build up some resources before we go back to studio," he said. "We are also looking for a label at the same time."

In the meantime, Freeflow will continue to tour and Evans said the band hopes to tour Europe in the winter season.

"If the Gods are all pointing in our favour it may happen," he said.

Catch Freeflow before they do get a label and the group's ticket prices soar.

Freeflow play the Brew Pub Friday, Aug. 26.
