Sara Buechner offering musical tributes

Entertainment

Pianist Sara Buechner is taking to the Eagle Eye Theatre stage to present something old, something new and something blue next week.

Many of the pieces she will play are old, dating back as far as the eighteen hundreds and one of the pieces she will play was written last year.

The something blue is the final piece she plans to perform at the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association (HSPAA) sponsored event next Friday (Oct. 14).

Buechner's performance, entitled Three Musical Tributes, will open with Minuet from Handel's "Berenice". The rest of her repertoire includes pieces by Michel Block, Dorothy Chang, Dinu Lipatti, Claude Debussy, Rudolf Friml and the evening will finish with Rhapsody in Blue by George Gershwin.

According to Joanna Schwarz of the HSPAA, Buechner had a terrific summer.

"Sara recently returned from Prague where she judged the Rudolf Firkusny International Piano Competition," said Schwarz. "While in Prague she got a call from an orchestra. A pianist canceled his performance due to a sickness and they suddenly needed someone to perform the Chopin Concerto on 24 hours notice. Sara filled in - got rave reviews and a return engagement with the orchestra. This was definitely a highlight of her summer."

Schwarz noted that Buechner works at the University of British Columbia. Along with being a talented pianist, Schwarz said Buechner is known as an entertaining speaker.

The performance of jazz, classical and other musical styles begins at 8 p.m. The doors to the theatre are scheduled to open at 7 p.m. and appetizers will be served.

The socializing is scheduled to continue after the performance at a reception for HSPAA members at the Howe Sound Inn.Tickets for the show are selling for between $20 and $10 at Mostly Books, Billie's Bouquet and Highland [email protected]
