Veronica McPhee has been chosen to portray Maria, a young would-be nun who is send to act as a temporary governess to seven children. Captain Von Trapp, played by Ross Smith, a widower, runs his family like a battleship.

Maria teaches the children how to sing and how to open their hearts and brings back joy into the family. However, she discovers she is helplessly in love with the Captain, a complicated matter since he is about to marry Elsa (Leala Selina). His friend Max, played by Paul Borchert, complicates matter. She runs back to the abbey where Mother Superior, played by Fran Booth, reminds her she must "Climb every Mountain" to find that dream.

Other cast members include Rebecca Hall and Mike Ciccione, Janice Carroll, Melissa Bachert, Alexandra McLean, Andrea Lake, Sarah Fuller, Jens Ourum, Emily Trann, and many other talented actors from Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton.

The play is being directed by Adriane Polo, with musical direction from Fran Booth and choral direction from Julie Murakami.

The Sound of Music will be presented by the Squamish Youth Theatre at the Eagle Eye Theatre Nov. 25-27 and Dec. 2-4. Now that the show is cast and in rehearsals, producers Adriane Polo and Mike Hewitt are looking for people who are interested in being part of the production crew. "There are so many elements to this musical, so many props and costumes, and sets to build and all sorts of details to be handled. This is a great opportunity for people to get involved and learn more about theatre production first hand," says Polo and asks for those interested to call her at 604-898-5930.
