Sweatshop Union hits the wall

Sweatshop Union's live shows are nothing if not inventive. While mainstream hip-hop takes a lot of flack for being derogatory and misogynistic, the Vancouver group uses their stage as a platform to voice concerns over the state of the world.

The group performs inSquamish on Saturday (June 16) at the Ocean Port Pub as part of their Hit the Wall tour in support of their new video, which can be found on YouTube.

"We had a great sold out show with Mat the Alien last time around and I think Kyp has even gone up since then to do a solo show," writes group member Dusty Melo on the band's website. "We're going to have a couple opening acts up this time around as well, so come through a little earlier to check them out.

Should be hype!"

Sweatshop union played their first gig in Squamish this year "suprisingly since its in our own backyard," said member Metty Dertmerchant, but they soon discovered the town's energy.

"It's amazing how close it is to Vancouver and we took so long to rock a show there - sorry Squeamish," he wrote in an email interview. "The last Sweatshop show we played there was bananas. I definitely can say Squamish likes to get rowdy! It's good to play places that appreciate a live show and like to have fun with us. It makes our job easier."

Tickets for the night, which also features performers DJ Itchyron, Triforce Omega, and Conspirituality, are $15 in advance, $20 at the door.
