There are some people the world never seems to forget. People with such personality that the public idolizes them despite - or perhaps because - of an all-consuming darkness. Janis Joplin was one of these people, and her popularity fueled the hit show Janis Janus, coming to Squamish Saturday (Jan. 28).

The Squamish Arts Council and Between Shifts Theatre are presenting the fundraising event, Janis Janus, at the Eagle Eye Theatre.

Janis Janus combines Joplin's music and life story, which was cut short due to an alcohol related death at age 27. Jan Kudelka combines her singing and acting talents with multi-award winning director Aiyyana Maracle and an elite team of musicians and technicians for this self-described "gut-wrenching" show that takes the audience into Joplin's room and holds nothing back.

"Part peep show, part mind-blowing concert," stated the show's manager, Rebekka Harvey. "In an outrageous strutting swirl of feathers, Kudelka brings to life this unstoppable talent at the height and depth of her tragic and unforgettable career, tearing her own heart out with love, loneliness and the pure pleasure of rock and roll."

The show has been touring the Yukon and B.C., receiving rave reviews on all stops.

The Arts Council and Between Shifts are partnering to raise money for the continuance of quality performances in Squamish. "This will be an ideal opportunity not only to show support for the arts in this creative town, but also to enjoy one howl of a good time," states an event news release.

"Come dressed appropriately in rose-coloured specs, flowers, beads, bells, boas, sandals and your best 60s crushed velvet."The Eagle Eye also gets into the act with a transformation into the days of shag carpet, protests and peace. The Howe Sound Inn will provide a cash bar for the show, donating all profits back to the event.

Admission is $30 at the door. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m.
