Police impounded more than a dozen motorcycles for excessive speed on Highway 99 last week, including a group of six that were riding as a pack at speeds exceeding 160 km/h.
Last Thursday (Aug. 22) at around 9 p.m., RCMP Traffic Services was conducting speed enforcement southbound on Highway 99 near Porteau Road when they saw six street bikes travelling south "at a high rate of speed," RCMP S/Sgt. Brian Cumming wrote in a statement.
The motorcycles were travelling in a group within two or three metres of each other and accelerated to more than 160 km/h, according to laser radar equipment, Cumming said. The bikes were stopped as they entered a merge lane, the drivers received speeding tickets and all six motorcycles were impounded for seven days.
Last Tuesday (Aug. 20), five more motorcycle riders were ticketed and had their bikes impounded for speeding in separate incidents during a speed enforcement sweep, Cumming said. All were travelling between 120 and 140 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, Cumming said.
"There were other impoundments during the period but these were the occasions with the biggest concentration of violators," he said.
Equipment stolen
Last Tuesday (Aug. 20), Squamish RCMP received a report of a break-in overnight at a business in the 39000 block of Midway in the Squamish Business Park. Tools and other equipment were stolen.
Bike taken
Last Wednesday (Aug. 21) at 12:15 p.m., police received a report that a Giant Glory mountain bike had been stolen from the Whistler Blackcomb Outlet Store. The suspect left a laptop bag as collateral to test ride the bike, but the bag contained only old magazines, Cumming said.
Fuel stolen
Fuel was reported stolen from large trucks in two separate incidents in Squamish late last week.
On Thursday (Aug. 22), a Freightliner truck had approximately 550 litres of fuel siphoned out of its tanks while parked overnight in the 39000 block of Progress Way.
On Friday (Aug. 23), a Kenworth truck had about 1,000 litres of fuel siphoned out of its tanks while it was parked overnight in the 1900 block of Centennial Way.
Impaired charge eyed
On Sunday (April 25) at around 6:25 p.m., police received several reports of a grey Ford pickup truck being driven erratically while headed northbound on Highway 99 in the Furry Creek area. The truck had front-end damage and police responding to the reports noticed a trail of debris leading to a home on Rainbow Lane in Britannia Beach. The damaged vehicle was in the driveway and a man was attempting to enter the home. He was read a breath demand and provided samples that resulted in a police recommendation of impaired driving charges.
