12 vehicles vandalized

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

At least a dozen vehicles were vandalized in a string of incidents on Saturday (May 10), including 10 on Mamquam Road.

Squamish RCMP received reports that six vehicles had their driver’s-side rear-view mirrors smashed while the vehicles were parked in the 1800 block. No other damage was done and apparently nothing was stolen. Four vehicles were similarly damaged in the 2400 block of Mamquam Road. One of the vehicles also had its windshield smashed. A resident told police three males had been seen along the road at around midnight, but no other descriptions were provided.

Two vehicles also sustained similar damage in the 38000 block of No Name Road.

Some residents in the targeted areas said they had heard boisterous youth wandering the streets and heard banging or crashing sounds, but no calls were made to police, who urged citizens to phone in signs of suspicious activity in the future.

Shoplifter arrested

Last Tuesday (May 6) at around 8:15 p.m., police responded to Wal-Mart in response to a report of a 35-year-old Squamish man, well known to police, in the store. The man was on probation from a prior incident in which he had stolen numerous items from the store; part of his probation order was not be found in any Wal-Mart in B.C.

Police arrested the man as he attempted to leave the store with stolen merchandise. He was also found in possession of a stolen credit card. As well, the suspect faces a charge of obstruction for having provided a false name to police, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said.

Homes targeted

While investigating the above incident, police were approached by a neighbour who reported having just arrived home to find the residence having been broken into. The home had also been ransacked and personal documents were stolen. Police are awaiting a complete list of stolen items.

Also on Sunday, police received a report that a home in the 41000 block of Meadow Avenue had been broken into sometime between Friday (May 9) at 6 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. A rear door had been broken to gain entry. Several Canadian passports were among the items stolen.

Knives stolen

On Tuesday (May 13) at around 2:40 a.m., police responded to a report of a break and enter at a business in the 1200 block of Hunter Place. A witness said he had seen a broken front window, but when police arrived, the suspects had fled, possibly on bikes. Several boxes of expensive knives, valued at approximately $2,000, were stolen.
