Tragedy struck a local family late last night when a 17-year-old celebrating his birthday with four friends died.
At 1:50 a.m. early Tuesday morning (Aug. 3), RCMP, Fire Rescue and BC Ambulance were called to a gravel pit below Quest University for a report of a fallen youth, according to a RCMP news release.
A group of five teens had entered into a private gravel pit and were horsing around on the piles of gravel and sand, according to a police report.
The victim slipped off a gravel ledge fell an estimated 30 feet.
The teen was unconscious at the scene when emergency crews arrived, and was stabilized and transported to Squamish General Hospital. But he succumbed to his injuries early this morning.
The B.C. Coroners Service and Squamish RCMP are continuing an investigation into the incident.
