18-month-old in hospital after fall in Porteau Cove

Squamish RCMP thank ‘guardian angel’ for rescue
Porteau Cove

After an 18-month-old girl slipped through the railing of an upper deck at Porteau Cove, and fell into the water below, the Squamish RCMP are praising her ‘guardian angel.’

The incident occurred Tuesday morning.

"Squamish RCMP are looking to speak to any witnesses that were there today and saw the event unfold," Cpl. Sascha Banks said in a press release. "We have yet to identify the man who rescued the girl from the water, but I have no doubt that he was that little girl's guardian angel."

A bystander jumped into the water to rescue the girl, and BC Ambulance, Lions Bay Fire Department and Squamish RCMP responded, taking the child to BC Children’s Hospital in an air ambulance.

A Squamish RCMP press release on May 7 said the child is in a stable condition, and the police will contact BC Parks about how to prevent similar incidents.
