A smile is something anyone can give away for free, but on Monday April 24 a local dentist office will be improving the smiles of Squamish children at no charge to celebrate Community Dental Day.

Sharon Gosnell from the newly opened Tantalus Dental Group said staff at the office would be volunteering their time to treat children under 16 - free of charge.

"We want to offer free cleanings to children under 16," she said. "We would like to target families in need, or those who don't usually come to the dentist."

During Dental Day, the practice's dentist, Dr. Shawn Gosnell, and his hygienists will clean teeth, while assistants discuss food choices and brushing habits with the children.

"There is a huge need in every community to educate kids and parents ho don't usually get to the dentist on a regular basis," said Gosnell. "We feel strongly that kids should learn how to brush their teeth and the kinds of food to eat."

Although the cleanings and education are completely free, Gosnell did suggest booking an appointment ahead of time to ensure you get a space.

"We want to treat as many kids as possible," said Gosnell. "We are hoping the spin-off is people will talk about the experience and want to continue the upkeep of their oral hygiene."

Last year, BC dentists saw 1,300 patients for free during Community Dental Day.

Tantalus Dental group is located in the Spectacle building by the Garibaldi Highlands 7-11. To book an appointment for Dental Day call 604-898-5300.
