Squamish Fire Rescue spent several hours fighting a blaze in an abandoned building on the corner of Victoria Street and Second Avenue on Sunday (May 23).
Shortly after midnight as smoke billowed into the surrounding neighbourhood, dozens of people lined the streets watching firefighters douse the two-storey building adjacent to the Chieftain Hotel.
Around 2 a.m. the fire had spread to the roof of the downtown building, threatening nearby power lines.
Crews were spotted cleaning up the site well past daybreak.
As of 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, caution tape surrounds the charred building and Victoria Street from Second Avenue to Cleveland Avenue was closed to vehicle traffic.
Neither Squamish Fire Rescue or Squamish RCMP could be reached for comment at this time.
