Tonight (Feb. 24) is the third annual All Free Family Celebration at Brennan Park Recreation Centre from 7 to 9 p.m. What's in store for families? There is a family skate, a public swim, indoor ball hockey, board games, scavenger hunts, sing-alongs for tots, bingo for seniors and more. Bands, local dance groups and musicians will happily entertain you too. Health issues like nutrition, cardiovascular health and info on those wanting to stop smoking will be offered. This event is sponsored by Communities That Care and the Hotspot. Free transportation is available by calling 604-898-3604.



The annual Heritage Tea at the Brightbill House at the West Coast Railway Heritage Park is Saturday (Feb. 25) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Reservations are recommended - if you are interested in attending, please call 604-898-9336.



This is the special weekend for the Wild at Art celebration. This evening (Feb. 24) the Howe Sound Performing Arts Association will welcome internationally-renowned pianist Janina Fialkowska for her third concert at the Eagle Eye Theatre at 8 p.m. The new Adventure Centre will feature Family Days Saturday (Feb. 24) from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday (Feb. 25) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Take in the Wild at Art Gallery where more than 100 works of art are on display. The main stage performers Saturday include Down by the Docks, Broadway or Bust and the Funny Stuff Circus. On Sunday there will be performances by the Jocelyn Pettit Band, Between Shifts Theatre, Highland Dancers, First Nations and more. Models and information on future development in Squamish will also be displayed. The Squamish Rotary Club is serving up a delicious loggers lunch Sunday with the money raised going to community project.



A special event during the Heritage Day on Sunday at the Adventure Centre will be the lowering of the Italian flag and the raising of the Canadian flag as the Olympic Games in Turin come to a close and Canada looks forward to hosting the 2010 Games.



The host church for this year's World Day of Prayer service is St. John the Divine Anglican Church (behind the Sea to Sky Hotel) on Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. The children's choir of St. John will also take part in the service. This ecumenical service is open to all residents of the community. The World Day of Prayer was begun by women in Canada and the United States in 1922 and is observed in more than 170 countries today.



On Tuesday, March 7 at 5:30 p.m., the Teen Book Club at the Squamish Public Library will gather to discuss Raven Quest by Sharon Stewart. Pizza is provided! Coming to the Eagle Eye Theatre in March is a walk down memory lane as the musical My Favourite Broadway is presented. Opening night is Friday, March 3 at 7:30 p.m. with shows Saturday, March 4 at 2 and 7:30 p.m., March 8, 9, 10 at 7:30 p.m. and March 11 at 2 and 7:30 p.m. There are six separate themes in the show and more than 70 members in the cast from youngsters to adults. Ryan Mooney is the artistic director and he is ably assisted by musical directors Veronica McPhee and Melissa Bachert. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet at $14 for adults, $12 for students and seniors and $10 for children.



When the Interact Clubs at Howe Sound Secondary and Don Ross Secondary schools and the Squamish Rotary Club held a combined garage sale fundraiser on Feb. 11, a total of $1,248.46 was raised. The schools received two thirds of the proceeds and the Rotary Club one third. The schools are donating their share to the Emmanuel Boys' Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. Hats off to all who organized the event and to the people who supported it.



The second annual Brackendale Documentary Film Festival will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday, March 4 and Sunday, March 5.



On Good Friday (April 14) the choral work The Seven Last Words from the Passion of Christ by Arthur Somervell will be performed at St. John the Divine Anglican Church. Singers are needed for this performance and the next rehearsal on Sunday (Feb. 26) will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. In the following weeks, rehearsals will be held each Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. For more information, please call Tracy Stuchbery at 604-892-3546.



A new Squamish Historical Society is being established and anyone interested in the history of our community is invited to attend a meeting on Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Howe Sound Inn Brew Pub.



The Squamish Public Library Foyer Gallery invites you to pick up a free wood-framed mirror from the Squamish Public Library at 37907 Second Ave. starting Feb. 17. Paint it, paper it, plaster, carve or decorate with any media. Produce a masterpiece, then bring it back to the Foyer Gallery by April 1. All masterpieces will be put on display for a silent auction from April 4 to May 7.

All proceeds go to operating and improving the Foyer Gallery.
