ABOUT TOWN: Breast cancer walk participants lauded

Our good wishes go with all participants who will be taking part in The Weekend to End Breast Cancer Walk to be held in Vancouver this weekend (Aug. 20 - 22). Each participant was asked to raise $2,000 with all proceeds in support of the B.C. Cancer Foundation. The Squamish women who have been fundraising and reached their goal and are now ready to tackle the 60-km walk over a two-day period are Lail Weeks, Wendy Gray, CloAnne Morasse and Shannon Allen. The Weekend to End Breast Cancer is a weekend of hope, as participants honour those who have lost their lives and to celebrate survivors.



The Squamish Credit Union in partnership with the Squamish Fire Department invite everyone to a fundraising barbecue and car wash in the Extra Foods parking lot Saturday (Aug. 21) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There are some great prizes to be won in the raffle, including trips to Whistler with fine dining and other activities included. The prizes will be drawn at the barbecue. The winner in all this fund raising is the Fire Department as all proceeds are earmarked for a defibrillator or perhaps two.



The Summer Reading Club at the Squamish Public Library will draw to a close on Thursday (Aug. 26). The summer staff will be hosting wind up parties on that day as a way of celebrating the achievements of the young readers. In order to qualify for an invite to a party, you must have brought your reading record back to the library at least once. The parties will run from 12 noon to 1 p.m. for the under-eight-year-olds, and from 2 to 3 p.m. for the nine-plus age group. Do make sure to sign up in advance as there will be a limit of 30 children for each party. Anyone who has participated in the Summer Reading Club this year is eligible to receive a certificate. These will either be presented at the wind-up parties, or can be collected from the front desk of the library on or after Aug. 26. The young people who have been the Summer Reading Club co-ordinators at the Squamish Public Library were: Aaron Purdie, Stephanie Collins, Jesse Hackett and Laura Wilson. All good wishes to them as they head back to school and university.



When the 10th annual Brackendale Fall Fair is held on Saturday Aug. 28, over 50 vendors will be on site, including many talented artists, sculptors, wood carvers, bee keepers and more. The farm animals always attract much interest and the free hayrides make for a fun trip around the grounds. Live entertainment will keep everyone in a happy mood. Checking out the exhibits entered by all ages showcases the talent of so many people. The grounds will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.



The Squamish Skating Club is holding a Summer Skate Camp for Aug. 23 to Sept. 3 in the ice arena for all levels of skaters ages four years and up. Registration for the fall skating season will be held in the Brennan Park Recreation Centre on Wednesday, Sept. 8 from 6 to 8 p.m.



Each month, the Crime Stoppers of Squamish, Whistler and Pemberton sponsor a pet of the month as a fundraiser. The winner receives a portrait photo at Burneing Images. Applica-tion forms are available at pet food stores and at veterinary offices. Crime Stoppers is a non-profit organization and is funded by tax-exempt contributions from citizens, business and service groups and the current Pet of the Month campaign.



Summer is winding down but the Brennan Park Recreation Centre still has two adventure camps to offer youngsters ages six to 12 years. Survivor Summer has team challenges full of adventure including swimming and biking and is held each day Aug. 23 to 27 from 9 to 3:30 p.m. Great Outdoors is at the same time but from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. Discover local trails and lakes while learning about camping, survival and safety. Music Camps for children ages three to nine years is planned Aug. 23 to 27. The three to five year olds attend from 10 to 12 noon and the six- to nine-year-olds from 1 to 3 p.m. For more information call the BPRC at 604-898-3604 or register at the centre.



On the weekends of Aug. 21 - 22 and Aug. 28 - 29 there is drop in hockey and skating times available for the whole family at the BPRC ice arena.

At the Squamish Aquatic Centre on Saturday, Aug. 28, the Everyone Welcome Swim includes End of Summer Daze. Join the staff from 3-5 p.m. for games, relays and water games.
