ABOUT TOWN: Christmas right around the corner

Howe Sound Performing Arts Association is pleased to welcome back to Squamish percussionist and former resident, Bruce Henczel. He will perform at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 8 p.m.

He will perform at the Eagle Eye Theatre on Saturday (Nov. 18) at 8 p.m. and will be accompanied by pianist Sandra Friesen. During the evening, students from and afternoon workshop will have an opportunity to join Henczel on stage. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet, Mostly Books and the Adventure Centre at $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and students.



The annual Christmas Bazaar at St. John's Anglican Church (behind the Sea to Sky Hotel) is always well attended and this year's theme for tomorrow (Nov. 18) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. is "Home for the Holidays." It features sewing, crafts, Mrs. Claus's bakeshop, gift baskets, jewelry, Christmas cards and poinsettias and raffle. Do enjoy tea with sandwiches and sweets.



There are still tickets available for tonight's (Nov. 17) Global Awareness Dinner at Howe Sound Secondary School. It is sponsored by the Interact Club and the proceeds will be sent to the Emmanuel Boyz Rescue Centre in Nairobi, Kenya. There are 25 students enrolled in this program at HSSS and your support of their efforts would be much appreciated. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and includes entertainment and a silent auction. Tickets are available at Mostly Books or at the school for $15 each.



The Squamish Gardeners invites everyone to their next meeting on Monday (Nov. 20) at 7 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library. The guest speaker will be Paul Buikema, owner/operator of Progress Landscaping. His topic will be: Tools - Purchase and Maintenance. Paul has over 17 years experience in the nursery and landscape industry and he is a Certified Horticulture Technician (retail), an ISA Certified Arborist and a Certified Tree Risk Assessor. He has had articles published in gardening magazines and has been a guest on a number of gardening radio shows. A $5 admission for non-members gives you a chance to win the door prize.



There are probably still appointments available for a mammogram when the Screening Mammography Mobile Unit is at the Squamish General Hospital from Nov. 22 to Dec. 1. To arrange a time and date, phone 1-800-663-9203.



Once again the members of the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital thank the community for their support of the Christmas Bazaar on Nov. 4. The winner of the queen-sized quilt was Faye Shea and the large teddy bear went to A. Tremblay. Check out the beautiful Christmas tree decorations and other items at the Gift Shop at the hospital.



A seminar for students in grades four to 12 and their parents is being offered by Don Ross and Howe Sound Secondary PAC groups on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. in the Don Ross Secondary multi-purpose room. Learn how to Get Better Grades with Terry Small, B.Ed, M.A. This program shows your child how to take charge of his/her time at school. Garibaldi Highlands Elementary School's popular annual Christmas Craft Fair will be held in the school on Friday, Nov. 24 from 6:30 to 9 p.m. It includes a bake sale, a variety of unique crafts and many activities such as Christmas photos of the kids or whole family. There is something for all members of your family. Donations will be accepted for the SPCA and Squamish Food Bank.



The Squamish and District Labour Committee will not meet in November. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5 at 7 p.m. at 38161 Second Ave. Call 604-815-0811.

The Adventure Centre is the location for the Inaugural Advocacy Gala "Community Health" hosted by the Sea to Sky Community Services Society on Friday, Nov. 24 from 7 to 11 p.m. This event is free and created as a social evening to enhance dialogue/networking for those interested and involved with Social Services in the Corridor. Celebrate Canadian Children's Book Week at the Squamish Public Library on Wednesday, Nov. 22 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. There will be stories, games and crafts around the deep-sea reading theme. Children over the age of three can come in their pyjamas and enjoy some popcorn.



Please mark your calendar for Saturday, Nov. 25 when St. Joseph's Catholic Women's League holds its annual Christmas Bazaar from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.



The Cedar Valley School is hosting the "Welcome the Winter" clothing and gear swap on Sunday, Nov. 19 from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. Consignment items may be dropped off at the school at Gate 3 - 39400 Government Road (south of Railway Heritage Park) from 3 - 5 p.m. Saturday (Nov. 18).



Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue is holding a silent and live auction tomorrow (Nov. 18) starting at 6 p.m. There will be a special table for boys and girls along with refreshments.



The Royal Canadian Legion's next Friday night supper will be Nov. 24 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. A pancake breakfast is planned for Sunday, Nov. 26.
