ABOUT TOWN: Fall Classic set for Sunday

The 28th annual Squamish Fall Classic has a new focus this year as the fundraiser will go towards the Angela James Memorial Scholarship.

The 28th annual Squamish Fall Classic has a new focus this year as the fundraiser will go towards the Angela James Memorial Scholarship. Angela succumbed to cancer last April and her friend Linda McHale felt a scholarship fund in Angela's memory would be a worthy one. The run starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Nov. 21) at the Howe Sound Secondary School. The 10 km and 5 km is open to runners, joggers and walkers. I is anticipated many school students will participate as there is a special school challenge award to the school with the most students involved.

Contributions for non-participants can be dropped off at Sea to Sky Ocean Sports or mailed to the Squamish Titans, c/o Helle Willburn, #28-2401 Mamquam Rd., Squamish B.C., V0N 3G0.

Each year (and for many, many years) St. John's Anglican Church has sponsored a wonderful Christmas Bazaar and I am sure that this year's event will be an excellent one as well. I will be held in the church (behind Sea to Sky Hotel) Saturday (Nov. 20) from 12 noon to 3 p.m. There will be tables laden with home baking, preserves, sewing, crafts woodcrafts, multi-prize raffle, fresh cut wreaths, specialty soaps and a children's play area. To top the day off, visit the Tea Room and enjoy all the goodies that come with it.

Tonight (Nov. 19) the Sea to Sky Hotel is sponsoring a Christmas craft sale with proceeds from the table rentals (20 in all) going towards Community Christmas Care. The doors of the ballroom are open from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Non-perishable food items and toys will also be accepted for CCC. A surprise visitor is expected to arrive at 7 p.m. and this will be a special treat for the children. There will be complimentary coffee from the Hotel but other refreshments (muffins, donuts etc.) will be available.

The Sea to Sky Brain Injury Program will be offering a number of services to individuals with brain injury, their family, friends and caregivers. Weekly group meetings will be held on Mondays from 11 a.m. to 12 noon (schedule to be confirmed after intro meeting). That introduction group will meet on Monday (Nov. 22) at 11 a.m. at the meeting room in the Coast Garibaldi Health Unit, 1140 Hunter Pl. If you wish more information, please call Suzie Beliveau at 604-892-2293.

In almost every column for the past three weeks, I have been mentioning that the Screening Mammography Clinic will be at Squamish General Hospital from Nov. 17 to Dec. 2. If you are between the ages of 40 and 70 and have never had a mammogram or perhaps it has been a few years since you last had one, please take advantage of this free service. There are still many appointments available and to get a date, please call 1-800-663-9203. A special thanks to the Women's Auxiliary to SGH who are volunteering their time to help out with registrations at the hospital.

There is a Christmas craft sale at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Sunday (Nov. 21) from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be many finely-crafted Christmas items on display and there will also be music to enjoy throughout the day.

If you are interested in attending the Books and Cheer function at the Squamish Public Library on Thursday (Nov. 25) at 7:30 p.m. it is suggested you purchase a ticket soon as there is a limited amount available. It should make for a pleasant evening with music, d'oeuvres and wine and beer tasting. The silent auction is a fundraiser for the library and your participation would be appreciated.

Not Just for Seniors program on Community Channel 10 on Tuesday (Nov. 23) at 7 and 10 p.m. and Wednesday (Nov. 23) at 10 a.m., 7 and 9 p.m. will feature Dennis McDougall in part two of his interview.

Next week, on Saturday Nov. 27, there will be a bottle drive sponsored by the Dry Grad 2005 and it will also include a Squamish Food Bank drive. Please have your bottles and food items ready when a grad knocks on your door.

The Howe Sound Women's Centre is holding a Christmas Bazaar (including Santa) on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the HSWC at 38116 Loggers Lane. More details next week!

A great way to be an ambassador for Squamish and at the same time give out useful information about the beautiful eagles that visit our Valley each year is to become part of the Eagle Watch program. There is a special training session at the Sea to Sky Hotel on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 8:45 a.m. to 12 noon. At 1 p.m., the group will move to the eagle viewing shelter on the dyke across from the Easter Seal Camp. To register, please call Amy at 604-932-3234 or email [email protected]. Wear warm clothing and take a lunch with you.

A fun time at the Squamish public Library each Wednesday night from 7 to 7:30 p.m. is Family Storytime. It is a half-hour of bedtime stories for children and everyone is welcome.

The Squamish Youth Resource Centre invites adults to attend an Open House at their location at 1135 Carson Pl., behind Howe Sound Secondary School on Tuesday (Nov. 23) from 6 to 8 p.m. Here is a chance for parents and other adults to check out what the SYRC has to offer. During the evening refreshments will be served. If you wish more information, please call 604-892-2207.

A National Addiction Awareness Week Pow-Wow will be held at Totem Hall tomorrow (Nov. 20) from 1 to 7 p.m. and Sunday (Nov. 21) from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Admission is by donation.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at the Extra Foods parking lot at 9:30 a.m. on Friday (Nov. 26). For more information call Elaine at 604-898-9498.

Squamish's Air Cadets will be out in uniform around the community this Saturday (Nov. 20) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. representing the cadet program and accepting donations. Every person who makes a ten-dollar donation to Royal Canadian Air Cadets programs will receive a commemorative Cadets coin. If you don't see a cadet on Saturday, the coins are also available at Glacier Interiors in the Squamish Business Park.
