ABOUT TOWN: Fun for all at GHE Fair Saturday

The Spring Fun Fair at Garibaldi Highlands Elementary School is tomorrow (May 6) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is sponsored by the Parent Advisory Council and parents, teachers and students are pitching in to make this a great day.

The outdoor family event will be filled with numerous fun activities and games in a celebration of spring. The family fun activities include hay rides, caterpillar crawl zone, magic castle, cake walk and sport skills events and games. There will be lots of food and beverages available too. The PAC is urging everyone to take along their coffee mugs to reduce environmental impact.



Everyone at some time must have seen the Disney movie ? For a special treat, plan on attending Howe Sound Secondary School's production of at the Eagle Eye Theatre tonight (May 5) and Saturday (May 6) and next weekend, May 11 to 13. Performances in the evening begin at 7:30 p.m. with special matinée performances on Saturdays at 2 p.m. Tickets are available at Billie's Bouquet and HSSS at $12 for adults and $10 for seniors and children.



After weeks of planning and selling tickets for their raffle, the Women's Auxiliary to Squamish General Hospital will hold their annual Spring Garage Sale and Raffle at St. John's Anglican Church tomorrow (May 6) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. There will also be a bake table and coffee and goodies will be available. Raffle tickets will also be sold with the prizes being $250, $175 and $75 cast. The draw will be held at noon.



An Auxiliary Day around the province will honour members of hospital auxiliaries. In Squamish, Auxiliary Day will be held at Gelato Carina on Cleveland Avenue on Wednesday (May 10) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a display and photos of equipment purchased for our local hospital through the efforts of the WASGH. This is also a chance to meet the members and enjoy a coffee and goodies.



The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #277 is having another popular Family Breakfast on Sunday (May 7) complete with pancakes, bacon, eggs and coffee for the great price of $5. Take along the family anytime between 8 and 11 a.m. There will also be a plant sale and legion members are asked to donate plants from their gardens. Also, all legion members are encouraged to attend the Honour and Awards Service at the Legion on Sunday at 2 p.m.



There is a great selection of decorated frames adorning the Foyer Gallery at the Squamish Public Library. This is a fundraiser for the Foyer and the bids on the silent auction will close at 2 p.m. on Sunday (May 7).



There will be a distribution by the Squamish Food Bank on Wednesday (May 10) at the Trinity Hall, Squamish United Church on Fourth Avenue on Wednesday (May 10) from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.



Members of the Hearts in Motion Walking Club will meet at the Dog Pound on Government Road for a dyke walk on Friday, May 12 at 9:30 a.m. Call me at 604-815-0152 for more information.



On April 24, 1981, a graduation ceremony was held for 13 women who had taken a three-month course in Homemaking at the Capilano College Learning Centre on Second Avenue. This was the first course of Howe Sound Home Support workers to be certified and now, the home support workers are a division of Vancouver Coastal Health. This is a special 25-year anniversary and Giselle Forbes-Kuntz worked hard to get this course offered in Squamish. Giselle is still a home support worker and many, many residents in our community truly value the service given by this dedicated group of women.



The Howe Sound Curling Club is sponsoring a garage sale tomorrow (May 6) from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. At 1 p.m. a Texas Scramble golf tournament will be held followed by a barbecue dinner and silent auction.



On Sunday (May 7) the GrassRoots Jam will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Don't know for sure but I bet our young and talented fiddle player Jocelyn Pettit will be performing during the evening!



Congratulations to Jennifer Lynn Ramsay, daughter of Bob and Elaine Ramsay of Squamish and Elwyn Smith, son of Pamela and Gilbert Smith on their marriage in Napier, New Zealand on April 7.



Camp Summit, located at the north end of the Easter Seal Camp on Government Road is holding a family-oriented Open House on Saturday, May 13 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be a fun day filled with games, climbing walls and more. For more information call Sharon at 604-898-3700.



The 2006 BC Seniors' Games will be held in Abbotsford this year from Aug 23 to 26. Some of the events include bowling, badminton, bridge, table tennis, swimming, track and field, cycling, golf, tennis, one act plays, and more. The deadline for entries is June 10. Bear expert and researcher Michael Allen will be the guest speaker at a Squamish Bear Network fundraiser on Thursday (May 11) at 7:30 p.m. in the Squamish Public Library. There will be a slide show given by Michael and his photos on letter cards will be for sale. The Squamish Bear Network is not selling tickets but requests donations from adults and children.



The television show comes to Squamish in a modified version for teens in grades 8 to 12. On Saturday, May 13 from 2 to 7 p.m. the Squamish Baptist Church Young Adults are hosting an Amazing Race and includes food and social time for free. As the week of May 1 - 7 is Youth Week in Canada, the Young Adults (about 20 college aged adults) who live in the area have offered to do an activity for the teens in the community. The Young Naturalist Club is a new branch of the Squamish Environmental Conservation Society and it is for children ages five to 14 years and their families. A social gathering for this family-based organization will be held at the Brackendale Art Gallery on Saturday, May 13. The dessert potluck (take your favourite recipe) begins at 6:30 p.m. followed by a movie, Winged Migration.

The Squamish SPCA is holding a Mother's Day garage sale on Sunday, May 14 at the Sea to Sky Hotel from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. donations for the sale would be appreciated and can be taken to the shelter on the municipal works yards on Government Road any day from 12 noon to 2 p.m. or call the shelter at 604-898-9890.



The Women's Health Network is holding an event at the Totem Hall on Friday, May 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. The guest speaker Susan Crowder will speak on Understanding Hormones.
