Two Squamish-based adult literacy programs received a total of more than $60,000 in funding announced this week as part of the B.C. government's Community Adult Literacy Program.

Making the Grade: Volunteer Literacy Tutor Program, is receiving $25,350 for 2012, while Squamish Faces Family Learning Program will receive $35,364. The programs are run through Capilano University with community partners the Squamish Volunteer Centre and Communities That Care, respectively.

Projects funded under CALP provide instruction and support to adult learners in everything from basic literacy to high school completion, officials said in a statement issued on Monday (Jan. 10).

"Literacy is the key to unlocking doors in many areas of life - on the employment front, at home with family, and around our community. These important programs give people the skills needed to open those doors," West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Joan McIntyre said.
