Adventure Centre buzzing with business

Store sales hit record last month, operations manager says

The number of visitors to the Squamish Adventure Centre has more than doubled in the past four years.

In the 12 months ending on June 27, 164,490 people past through its front door 99,490 more than in 2008. Galileo Coffee and the Little Squids parent-run child care are big draws to the centre, operations manager Deanna Wampler said.

In the last year or so, this building has really turned into a visitor and a community building, she said.

Little Squids a volunteer initiative that promotes programming for youth up to six years old attracts up to 50 children and their parents, Wampler noted. All the centre's office space is currently rented out. Last year, its rental revenue alone doubled from 2010.

We sometimes have a waiting list for renting desks back here, Wampler said.

The overall building income jumped 37 per cent from 2010 to 2011. The centre also played host to more than 70 events for 45 different groups.

The spring and summer months have recorded the best sales so far for The Squamish Store, said Nadine Bombardier, store manager. Revenue brought in by the store in July was the highest for a month since the centre opened in 2005.

There seems to be more American visitors in town than over past year, Bombardier said.

I am seeing more and more people just stopping in Squamish, she noted.

The centre has its regulars, Bombardier said, adding that Squamish residents have been supportive of the facility.
