The Squamish Adventure Centre is picking up where the town's former movie theatre left off.
In light of Garibaldi 5 Cinema's closure in August, the adventure centre is opening up its 50-seat theatre weekly. Reel Wednesdays features National Film Board of Canada (NFB) movies, said Deanna Wampler, the centre's operations manager.
The facility ran the program in 2007 and 2008, but it has since been on hiatus, she noted.
"We are really excited to bring it back," Wampler said.
Wampler said she's seen some familiar faces since Reel Wednesdays resumed on Oct. 3. The centre's staff hope to grow the weekly event, she said, noting to date the audience ranges between five to 18 viewers.
"The movies are amazing," Wampler said.
On Wednesday (Nov. 14), the centre will show Children of Soldiers. Directed by Claire Corriveau, the film focuses on the children of parents deployed in Afghanistan. It delves into the uncertain future and looming perspective of death faced by thousands of young Canadians.
The variety of films screened will range from environmentally focused entries to documentaries about amateur hockey. If the feature is less than 80 minutes long, it will be accompanied by a short film, Wampler said.
The doors open at 7 p.m. with the curtain rising at 7:30 p.m. Galileo Coffee is open to serve snacks and drinks, Wampler noted. "We hope that it grows and becomes more popular," she said.
A suggested donation for admission is $5 to help cover expenses, Wampler said.
