An adventurer and television personality is planning a three-day visit to Squamish next week to attempt a daring jump off the top of the Stawamus Chief in a wingsuit.
Donald Schultz, described in an email from his promoter as a "world-renowned venom and reptile expert, adventurer and Discovery Channel personality," is planning a brief stop in Vancouver on Wednesday (June 1) before coming to Squamish from June 2 to 4 to attempt his jump.
Schultz, a South African-born thrillseeker, has made more than 200 "BASE jumps" in his wingsuits, which allow the jumper to slow his or her falling speed from more than 120 miles (200 kilometres) per hour to around 30 mph (50 km/h).
He told The Province newspaper in an article published on Thursday (May 26) that he intends to wait until conditions are right before attempting his jump off the 2,000-foot-high granite monolith.
"If the weather's not perfect, we're not going to do it," he said. "If something goes wrong, it isn't good for us, and it isn't good for the reputation of our sport."
Stay tuned to The Chief for more on Schultz's Squamish adventure.
