Eight cars racing down the Sea to Sky Corridor couldn't outrun Air One.
On Friday (May 3), shortly after 11:30 p.m., Squamish RCMP received calls about a large group of vehicles whizzing southbound on Highway 99 near Furry Creek. Squamish officers weren't in a position where they could safely catch the speeders, so the police called in a helicopter Air One.
The group of eight was located by police in the chopper. Cars were recorded travelling speeds in excess of 140 kilometres per hour in a 80 km/h zone, West Vancouver Police wrote in a statement.
West Vancouver officers set up a roadblock on Highway 1, east of Eagleridge Drive. The eight vehicles were impounded for seven days and the drivers, ranging in age from 21 to 25, were served violation tickets for excessive speed.
Six of the drivers were from Vancouver, one was from Richmond and the other Surrey, the release stated. All vehicles appeared to have varying stages of high performance modifications, it noted.
A small percentage of people use the Sea to Sky highway as a speedway, Squamish RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said. Police monitor online motorcycle and high end car websites, he noted.
The highway improvements, good weather and weekends all add to the racing problem, Pride said.
It is too frequent from our point of view, he said.
