Air quality advisory ended for Metro Vancouver

Breathe easy — those in planning to go to Metro Vancouver can go about their business as usual

Anyone who had plans for going down to the city this weekend can breathe easy, as an air advisory for the Metro Vancouver area has been ended.

Those in the area should be able to go about their day-to-day activities as usual.

Earlier today, the federal government has issued an alert for the eastern part of Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley because of high concentrations of ground-level ozone.

"Avoid strenuous outdoor activities during mid-afternoon to early evening, when ozone levels are highest," read the advisory. "Exposure is particularly a concern for infants, the elderly and those who have underlying medical conditions such as lung or heart disease and asthma."

Ground-level ozone is a colourless and highly irritating gas which gathers just above ground level.

The gas comes from a combination of natural and human activities.

On the natural end, plant life such as coniferous forests can be a contributing factor.

Human activity that exacerbates the irritants often comes from activities such burning of coal, gasoline and oil in motor vehicles, among other things.

For those staying in town, there's good news.

The air quality health index reads two out of 10, a rating of low risk, which means that locals can still enjoy their usual outdoor activities in Squamish.
