A dramatic scene unfolded in Garibaldi Park Saturday (July 24) when a single engine plane with two onboard attempted to land on a glacier at around noon.
The incident happened approximately 21 miles east of Squamish. The attempted landing damaged the aircraft due to the rough terrain. The plane was disabled and could not fly after the landing. No one was injured. The matter is being investigated by Transport Canada.
Black bear destroyed
Black bear confrontations continue to rise due to human carelessness. From July 19 to 25, the Conservation Officer Service received 28 problem wildlife calls relating to black bears, according to conservation officer Dave Jevons.
A bear was destroyed last week at Evans Lake after becoming overly aggressive once he'd received numerous food rewards from garbage left by campers at Lovett Lake.
"It made its way down to Evans Lake where it was destroyed," said Jevons.
"When a bear becomes food conditioned to garbage and other non-natural food sources basically it results in a high level of conflict and ultimately in its destruction."
Despite the increase in bear incidents this year, cougars have not created nearly the problems they created last year. Jevons said there were a few spotted several weeks ago around the golf course but none last week.
Conservation officers also issued numerous charges to recreationalists for campfires and illegal use of a vehicle at Anderson Beach.
"There's not meant to be any vehicles out there, but people still tend to take them out there," said Jevons.
Vehicle taken without consent
On Saturday (July 24), a vehicle owner reports her vehicle was taken without her consent by a 19-year-old male relative. Investigations determined the vehicle was involved in a collision at the PetroCan Service Station on Garibaldi Way. The relative was arrested and released to appear in court to face charges of Taking auto without consent, no valid drivers licence and fail to remain at collision scene with a first appearance set for Aug 25.
Vehicle broken into
On Sunday (July 25), a group of tourists reported their motorhome was broken into while they were hiking in the Garibaldi Lakes area. Personal effects and property were stolen including Swiss passports, credit cards and currency.
On Sunday(July 24) at 9:40 p.m., a motorcycle was stopped on Judd Road at Government Road as neither the driver or passenger were wearing helmets. The driver displayed symptoms of impairment by alcohol and failed a roadside screening. The driver was returned to the detachment and registered readings over the legal limit. The driver was released on a promise to appear in court on Sept. 15 to answer to a charge of impaired driving.
