Alignment of transit, HSSS schedules sought

Students and parents want extended after-school bus service, the principal of Howe Sound Secondary School said this week.

Students and parents want extended after-school bus service, the principal of Howe Sound Secondary School said this week.

At the Squamish Transit Standing Committee meeting on Tuesday (July 10), Christine Perkins told committee chair Susan Chapelle that it's difficult to get youth back to school for evening activities, such as band, football and basketball. She would like to see Squamish Transit service to local school around 4:30 and 5 p.m., giving pupils without other transportation options the chance to take part in the extracurricular activities.

Always when there is no service we are cutting off a portion of the population, she said, noting that income and parents working later shifts are limiting factors for students seeking transport.

Teachers and students would also like the transit service to align with school bells, Perkins added, noting that Squamish Elementary School has 80 new students enlisted in its French immersion program, many of them living far away from the school.

A draft B.C. Transit report that includes potential route and fare changes was discussed at the meeting. It also examines cost-sharing opportunities between the District of Squamish, the Sea to Sky School District and B.C. Transit. For a full report check next week's Chief.
