Squamish RCMP last week arrested a man wanted by the FBI in connection with a case of alleged investment fraud in the United States.
On Thursday (March 20), local police received information that Sean Finn “may be hiding out in Squamish,” RCMP Staff Sgt. Brian Cumming wrote in an emailed statement.
Police confirmed the information and Finn was seen driving south from Squamish. Police stopped him near Murrin Provincial Park and arrested him, Cumming said.
Finn, 44, of Whitefish, Mont., is one of six people who was indicted in U.S. District Court in Nevada last December. According to a statement issued by the FBI, court documents allege he and five others — four Americans and two Swiss nationals — were involved in an investment scheme. The accused collected payments of between $200,000 and $1.2 million between October 2009 and October 2013, telling the victims the money was to be invested in European equities and debt offerings, the FBI alleged.
The accused provided fake bank statements and said the investments would yield high rates of return, U.S. authorities claim. However, the defendants did not put the money toward the investments but “used the money for their own purposes,” court documents allege.
Finn was arrested on an FBI Extradition Act warrant, Cumming said. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
Door damaged
Last Monday (March 17), police received a report that a door had been damaged during an attempted break-in at a home in the 38100 block of Clarke Drive. No entry was gained and nothing was stolen.
Computer stolen
On Thursday (March 20), Squamish RCMP received a report that a computer had been stolen sometime overnight from a common area of a seniors’ home in the 38200 block of Third Avenue.
Bike stolen
On Friday (March 21), a mountain bike valued at $3,000 was reported stolen from an open carport in the 100 block of Lions Bay Avenue in Lions Bay. The bike was not locked securely, Cumming said.
Business entered
On Saturday (March 22), police received a report that the Cloudburst Café, 1861 Mamquam Road, had been broken into overnight. A gate was kicked open, the business’s interior was ransacked and an IPod was stolen.
Drivers prohibited
On Saturday, 10 people were prohibited from driving and had their vehicles impounded during a series of police road checks around town, part of a national strategy to combat impaired driving, Cumming said. The enforcement measures were taken against drivers alleged to have been impaired by either alcohol or drugs.
Home entered
On Sunday (March 23) afternoon, police received a report that an unidentified male had entered a home in the 1400 block of Charles Place in Brackendale. When startled by the resident, the man fled, but has not been apprehended. Nothing was stolen from the home.
