Animal rescue needs rescue of its own

Recent flooding destroyed Squamish shelter.

One of the rescue dogs relaxes at Canine Valley Re-education and Adventure Centre Society. The shelter was recently flooded, leaving the animals homeless.

They have been there for Squamish’s unwanted or difficult pets for four years and now the Canine Valley Re-education and Adventure Centre Society (CVRAC) is asking Squamish to be there for it.

The heavy rain this week flooded the animal shelter and its training yard on Government Road, near North Yards. The shelter is damaged beyond repair, leaving six vulnerable dogs and five cats without a place to go.

For the last few nights, the animals have been living in the home of canine behavioral consultant and centre founder, Valley Calderoni.

“I haven’t been able to sleep,” she said, her eyes filling with tears. “It is very stressful.”

Calderoni has no insurance.

“For every huge challenge there is always some huge growth. We need a solution,” Calderoni said.

She said the shelter desperately needs funds to help build a new shelter and make repairs to the flooded training yard.
“We need to dig trenches, do some leveling, and reroute the water that is flooding our training yards,” Calderoni said in a letter to The Squamish Chief.

If the non-profit CVRAC does not raise the funds, and soon, the doors will have to be closed on the shelter, and the animals euthanized.

Calderoni estimates $8,000 would be enough to build a new animal shelter and do repairs. She said volunteers are also needed to help with building and repairs.

The centre houses rescue dogs that were going to be euthanized due to behavior issues. Behavior consultants also provide people with dog education and training. They also provide animal therapy for children and adults with mental health issues, among other problems.
