Announcing grandchildren: the greatest time in a seniors life

Community

Well, are we all still going strong? I do know that Glenn and I are feeling rather spritely at the moment: on Aug. 18 our son and his wife had a beautiful baby girl, almost 8 lbs. (3 kilograms) and 21 inches (53 cm) with a full head of dark curls.

Grandchildren are surely one of the great compensations for growing older.

We were reluctant to leave them all down in Portland but the column must go on!

Here in Squamish the events of interest for retirees/seniors for this week are: Women On Wheels (WOW) will meet at 9 a.m. on Monday (Aug. 29) at Canadian Tire to carpool to Richmond where they will then ride 32 kilometres from the Nature Park to Steveston and back with lunch while in Steveston. Contact person: Shirley at 604-898-5715.

The Tantalus Walking Club will meet at 10 a.m. on Thursday (Sept. 1) at the Chieftain Centre parking lot by Save-On-Foods for a flat walk along Crescent Slough north towards Buckley's Crossing.

All dogs accompanying walkers must be on a leash. Contact person: Joyce at 604-898-5594.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Group will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Friday (Sept. 2) in front of Shoppers Drug Mart for an estuary walk. Contact persons: Maureen at 604-815- 0152 or Stephanie at 604-898-1268.

Joan McIntyre, our local MLA, is said to have mentioned in her talk last Wednesday to the Caregivers Support Group and The Healthy Brain Program for Early Dementia that at this time in BC, those needing long term care can expect to pay at least $175 a day.

It seems to me that the cost of trying to keep fit during the years we are able to might actually increase the number of those years of relative flexibility, cognitive ability and sociability and be well worth the comparatively smaller cost.

More and more contacts are being made with groups wishing to have news of their events and activities published. Remember to call me at 604-898-5029 or e-mail to bgrudkin@telus.net for items not necessarily exclusive to retired or senior persons.
