This week, the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund has brought about 70 burn survivors to the annual Burn Camp in Squamish.
The camp is on this week from July 16 to 21 and brings in burn survivors aged six to 18 for “empowerment, connection and fun,” according to a news release.
In addition to the survivors, over 50 camp counsellors and support staff come to help the campers.
Burn Camp takes place at the Cheakamus Centre in Brackendale, with the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund covering all Burn Camp expenses, according to the release.
A committee of firefighters and medical personnel organizes the camp.
This year’s Burn Camp is hosted by the District of North Vancouver Firefighters Local 1183.
Alongside Burn Camp, the Camp Kick Off also features a Young Burn Survivors’ Family Day for children five and under, who will be future Burn Camp participants.
“With arts and crafts organized by nurses who are members of the Burn Collaborative — a partnership between the Burn Fund and BC Children’s Hospital — these children have the opportunity to experience the spirit of Burn Camp firsthand,” the release continued.
The Burn Fund was established in 1978 by the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Association which supports burn survivors and works to increase the public’s knowledge about fire and burn prevention.
