Ashlu compound entered

Weekly briefs from the Squamish RCMP

Police this week arrested a Squamish man after a break-in at the Ashlu Creek hydro station.

On Sunday (July 29) at around 9:30 p.m., Squamish RCMP received a report of an alarm at the Ashlu compound. Video surveillance showed a male at the site, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride said in a statement.

The suspect, a 21-year-old Squamish man described as "known to police," was arrested a short distance away in possession of property stolen from the site. A fence had been cut to gain access and damage was done to "numerous" cables, possibly with the intent of stealing wiring.

Police seized the suspect's vehicle after learning that it was not insured and had no licence plates. The investigation is ongoing.

Wire stolen

Police are also investigating the theft of copper wire from a Rogers communications tower in the Smoke Bluffs after having received a report on Thursday (July 26) that approximately 100 feet (30 metres) of the wire had been stolen. Because of the isolated location of the site, police have been unable to determine when the theft might have occurred.

Jewelry swiped

Also on Thursday, police received a report of rings valued at around $8,000 having been stolen from a locker at Brennan Park Recreation Centre between noon and 1 p.m. The locker had been left unlocked and unattended, Pride said.

Boat, motor stolen

An inflatable boat was reported stolen from the Squamish Yacht Club on Sunday (July 29), with the theft having occurred between June 24 and July 8. The boat, valued at approximately $3,000, is a 9-foot AB A1275 with a 15-horsepower black and red Mercury outboard motor. The boat was originally grey but had been painted white with stripes on the hull. An Italian flag was also attached.
