Police are seeking the public's help in their investigation of a daylight assault of a wheelchair-bound man who was injured last week when someone reached out the window of a vehicle and knocked over his chair.
Last Wednesday (Sept. 26) at noon, police were called to the scene of an incident on Highway 99 near Clarke Drive, RCMP Sgt. Wayne Pride wrote in a statement.
A man was travelling northbound on the southbound side of Highway 99 in a powered wheelchair when a dark-coloured Jeep approached, travelling southbound. A passenger reached out the window and struck the man, possibly in an attempt to steal his hat, Pride said.
The suspect then grabbed the wheelchair's handlebar, knocking the chair over. The victim was taken to Squamish General Hospital and treated for injuries to his right shoulder and hip.
Two people who witnessed the incident stopped to help the victim. Police would like to speak to the two Good Samaritans and are seeking the public's help in identifying those responsible for the attack. Vehicle recovered
Last Tuesday (Sept. 25) at around 8 p.m., police received a call regarding an erratic northbound driver having crashed into a median on Highway 99 near Lions Bay. The driver reportedly left the scene, walking southbound on the highway.
At the scene, police found a white 1993 Honda Civic with a punched ignition, indicating the car was likely stolen, Pride said. Police confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen from a Vancouver home earlier in the day. A 23-year-old Vancouver resident was located a short while later and arrested. He had a small amount of marijuana in his possession. In addition to the drug charge he faces charges of possession of stolen property, dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident.
Biker faces charges
On Sunday (Sept. 30), police responded to a single-vehicle motorcycle crash near the intersection of Squamish Valley and Paradise Valley roads. The male driver was reported to have run the bike off the road, rendering the driver unconscious. When the man awoke, he fled the scene. A police dog was used to track the driver into a wooded area, where he had been hiding. The 53-year-old Squamish man was taken to Squamish Hospital to be treated for his injuries. He faces a charge of failing to remain at the scene of a crash and was given a 30-day roadside driving prohibition and vehicle impound, as alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, Pride said.
Bike stolen
Last Tuesday (Sept. 25), police received a report of a bike having been stolen from the rack of a vehicle parked in the 38800 block of Britannia Avenue. The bike had been double locked to the rack, which was damaged in the theft. The bike is a black 28-speed Specialized Stump Jumper Pro with gold pinstripes and a new Fox Float fork, valued at $4,500.
Man arrested
Last Tuesday (Sept. 25) at 7:30 p.m., police responded to a reported assault in the 38000 block of Hemlock Avenue. At the scene police were told that the suspect had fled after assaulting his wife after an argument. A 32-year-old man was arrested a short time later and faces charges of assault and possession of a small quantity of a drug, believed to be cocaine, that were found in his possession during the arrest.
Car stolen
On Sunday at around 5:30 p.m., police received a report of a vehicle having been stolen from the 38000 block of Guilford Drive sometime during the previous day. The vehicle was a grey, four-door 1999 Pontiac GrandAm.
