Squamish residents will be receiving their annual property assessment notices in the mail from BC Assessment this month - and odds are good it'll be significantly higher than last year's.

The total value of the District of Squamish's assessment roll, which estimate all commercial, industrial and residential property's market values as of July 1, 2007, increased to $3.5 billion, up from $3.0 billion the previous year. The 17 per cent increase includes a total of approximately $157 million worth of new constructions, subdivisions and rezoned land, according to a press release from BC Assessment released Wednesday (Jan. 2).

The assessments are used to calculate municipal property tax rates.

Property owners who feel their assessment is incorrect or who do not receive their assessment notice can contact BC Assessment by visiting www.bcassessment.ca, by visiting the Vancouver Sea to Sky Assessment Office at #200 1818 Cornwall Ave. in Vancouver or by phoning toll-free 1-800-661-1780. The deadline to file a notice of complaint for an independent review of your assessment is Thursday, Jan. 31.
